Week One- Arts and Crafts

Week One- Arts and Crafts

Chapters 15,16

Sumary:
The Arts and Crafts movement was a reaction against the Victorian Period. The Victorian era was very cluttered and did not really follow a cohesive style. William Morris fought against that and wanted to go back to the basics of traditional style. 8 of the Major characteristics of Arts and Craft style furniture are:
    - Completely hand-made
    - Wood joists visible
    -Based on Medieval designs (Gothic)
    -Influenced by Shaker furniture
    -Predominate wood oak (not mahogany)
    -Simple honest designs
    -Very heavy furniture
    -Large exposed hinges

The Morris Chair

Modern Morris Chair

The Morris Chair has continued to be made but has become more modernized but you can still see the Arts and Crafts characteristics.

Authentic arts and crafts style rooms

Arts and crafts modern style rooms

I found this interpretation of Modern Arts and Crafts-style dining rooms. It is a beautiful representation of a modern version of this style, which again has many characteristics of the Arts and Crafts style.

Arts and crafts Staircase and trim

I think that this shows the wood tones, styles of trim, and stairs in the Arts and Crafts style. Also as you can see in this picture trim is a very important part of the Arts and Crafts style.

One Step Further

Bialecki Architects

Bialecki Architects incorporates the Arts and Crafts style into their designs by emphasizing natural materials, exposed structural elements, handcrafted details, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape, often drawing inspiration from the pioneering Arts and Crafts architects like Gustav Stickley and Greene & Greene, while reinterpreting the style with a contemporary aesthetic and focus on sustainability; essentially, they capture the essence of the Arts and Crafts movement by prioritizing simplicity, quality craftsmanship, and a harmonious relationship between the building and its environment

Comments

  1. I like how you put characteristics of Arts and Crafts furniture into bullet points so it's easy to understand and note in the furniture pictures you chose. Bialecki Architects has some really cool designs (I like how you added that they get inspiration from Gustav Stickley).

  2. Bethany,
I loved your Blog post this week. After giving a brief description of how this movement came about you gave us the eight characteristics of arts and crafts furniture. I loved the modern example of the dining room- it is so lovely. Also your image of the stair case and trim. The elements of using oak wood and beautiful trim was excellent. Bialecki Architects was a great company to look at in more detail. The interiors that you showed us are beautiful modern examples of this style. 50/50 points
